3 Borders

This group exhibition invited artists from neighbouring countries to exhibit alongside Togolese artists, as an opportunity to engage in conversation about the pluralities and commonalities of different artistic practices in the region.

The exhibition reflects the regional and pan-African outlook of the Palais.

3 Borders was anchored by works by eight contemporary artists working in diverse mediums across the four countries of Ghana, Togo, Benin and Nigeria. The artists in the exhibition have been chosen for their ability to inventively engage with the materials of their environment. The exhibition explored the themes of connectivity, materiality, or migration.

The exhibition is suggestive of the ways in which this connects with a multitude of topics, including: the migration of objects, how artists are involved in the processes of recontextualisation, of invention of form, meaning and aesthetics, and in the transformation of value. Object reuse, assemblage, or installations of everyday or cast-off goods, as tools for making political, social and conceptual statements.

The exhibition reflected on how artists are involved in the process of defining what might be recognized as the visual language in the sub-region.
